A Very Breezy & Accidental Free-Birth

Posted by Reagan on 25th Jul 2023

Reagan placed a hire of a birth pool and a CUB long before her EDD.

A week before she was due to pick up her hire around 36 weeks, she contacted me letting me know that her baby recently started presenting breech and that she will try everything to encourage him to turn around. She really wanted  her home birth.

In Australia, a breech birth is considered risky, therefore Reagan would be required to birth in hospital, in most situations via c/section.

I told her to take her time and not to worry about her hire, wishing her all the best.

A couple of weeks later Reagan messaged me advising baby has turned!

I was really happy to hear this, for Reagan to have her desired home birth, particularly after a not so great first birthing experience in hospital.

Here's her birth story.......................

We welcomed our baby boy at 7:30am on the 22nd of July 2023

At 40 + 1 weeks. Weighing 3.525kg. Length 50cm

Born at home. Our very healing, accidental free birth. We were fortunate enough to get into the MGP program. So grateful for our lovely midwives, though not present for the birth were amazing before and afterwards with their care.

After being induced with my first born and having so many interventions and a traumatic hospital experience, I knew that this pregnancy I wanted a home birth and completely different experience.

I felt a pop in bed at 3:15am then a leak. Had a much bigger gush 5 minutes later. Contractions started quite mild about 4:30am but were 5 minutes apart and I was sick a few times. I rang the hospital at 5:30am and the lady said to go back to bed, try to sleep and call back when things started ramping up. I pretty much hung up the phone and it ramped up immediately and I could no longer talk. We had a stunning birth space set up but I asked my partner to put down blankets on the lounge room floor in front of the heater. For a couple of hours I had very strong contractions, with my dogs by my side. My partner was playing with our toddler in the next room and kept checking in. Couldn’t get the words out to tell him to call the midwives. I lost my mucus plug and felt the ring of fire so got into the shower for two minutes. I was on all fours and could feel a head inside me. Still couldn’t find the words to yell for my partner so banged on the bathroom door for him. One big push and his head was out. Another big push and he was born. My partner came into the bathroom and was extremely shocked to see me holding our baby. I’ll never forget the look on his face. I was finally able to ask him to call the hospital. One midwife arrived half hour later and the other in 45 minutes. I was already back in bed and birthed the placenta with the midwife. I had uninterrupted skin to skin, delayed cord clamping and unassisted breastfeeding which was all very important to me. Was very peaceful and the midwives did their checks, I had no grazing or tears and they left 3 hours later. Was so lovely being home with my family ❤️
