The Power Of Language in Pregnancy
Posted by Mirjana. M on 16th Nov 2024
Language and words affect expecting women so much so that it affects the way their labour and birth.Pregnant women are exposed to many stories and many opinions throughout their whole pregnancy.
Unfortunately most of what women hear are the horror stories.
The horror stories are seen on social media, negative birth stories re-told by family, friends and work colleagues.
Perhaps the obstetirican or midwife throws out some negative words or scenarios here and there too.
All of this has a negative impact on the pregnant woman and may ultimately affect her labour and birth.
All this ‘information’ is like a twister in full flight, a bleak darkness swirling in the pregnant mind.
Each woman who is growing a new little baby wants to do the very best, wants to do it right, wants it to be seamless.. and yet how does she choose, when the bombardment of unhelpful words and stories are mixed with a cocktail of hormones. It creates fear and a surge of the stress hormone while also making it impossible for the woman to have clear thinking and decision making.
WORDS CARRY A LOT OF POWER
The negative stories heard and the key words sometimes mentioned by a care provider - words such as big baby, small baby, gestational diabetes, small pelvis, malpositioned baby, weight and BMI, or whatever - does a lot of harm to the subconscious mind of the expecting woman.
Women lose faith in their ability to be able to birth their baby, feeling unable to birth baby naturally and therefore more likely to go down the track of a medically managed labour.
If you are hoping for and you are hoping for a natural and empowering birth please take the following TIPS:
DO NOT listen to the horror birth stories of others. Many of those birth stories are likely the result of the cascade of interventions.
Surround yourself with positive birth stories. There are plenty out there. The positive birth stories will imbed into your subconscious, and your fear will diminish and you will likely feel a sense of strength and confidence and empowerment.
Instead of having a typical baby shower, have a 'mother blessing' I don't know where to begin on the positives that come out of this beautiful ceremony. The power and prayer of women supporting and holding you on this day. Ultimately a beautiful preparation for your birth.
